Energy from Waste and Reduce, Reuse and Recycle
A school of thought exists suggesting that investing in energy from waste detracts communities from making progress with the national agenda to reduce, reuse and recycle. The evidence suggests otherwise.
The Environment Agency suggests EfW can be compatible with high rates of recycling. This is evidenced in European countries such as Germany and Denmark that have long been seen as leading on the environmental agenda, but also have considerable numbers of EfW plants. This combined strategy means that landfill usage is extremely low in both countries, which is not the case in the UK.
Equally, Wheelabrator Technologies' experience in the U.S. backs this view up. We have found that the communities we serve with an EfW plant tend to recycle at a rate 14 percent higher than the national average.
